  • There are lots of movies that have sequels. Some of them have one sequel, some of them have two, but there are even movies with seven sequels (e.a. Harry Potter). I’ve seen a few, and I’ve made a list of some of them ranked according to my opinion of likeliness.

    High School Musical

    1. High School Musical 2 (2007)
    2. High School Musical 3: Senior Year (2008)
    3. High School Musical (2006)

So we all know that these movies are not great. But it’s part of me growing up, so this trilogy is definitely one of my favorites. I really like the summer vibe in HSM 2, the songs in HSM 3 are the best and the first one is all right, but the story isn’t exciting enough.

If we compare my list with the IMDb scores, HSM 1 is the best, with the second one following the first and the last one the worst. They all score badly though, between the 5,3 and the 4,7.

    The Lord of the Rings

    1. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
    2. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
    3. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

This trilogy in comparison with the trilogy above, these movies are all following the same story. The third part is obviously the best because of the climax – the ring is destroyed. Don’t get me wrong, they’re all really great though! If I have to make a list, I dislike the second movie the most, but I can’t say why. I guess it’s because the first one is the beginning of the story, the third one the end but the second one is just there.

I guess most of the people agree with me, as the IMDb scores are in the same order. (#1: 8,8, #2: 8,7 and #3: 8,9). But like I said: They’re all great!

    Wreck-it Ralph

    1. Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)
    2. Wreck-it Ralph (2012)

So as you might have read, I went to the premiere of Ralph Breaks the Internet. Maybe it’s because of the whole experience, but I like the sequel better than the first movie. I really liked the modern twist in Ralph Breaks the Internet, while in Wreck-it Ralph we got the 80’s vibe. The easter eggs in the sequel were more fun than in the first movie.

IMDb scores are not really great for comparison as Ralph Breaks the Internet only has 22.000 votes whereas Wreck-it Ralph has got 325.000. But the sequel scores a 7,5 and the first one a 7,7, so they’re almost the same at this moment. We have to wait for more votes though.

    Camp Rock

    1. Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam (2010)
    2. Camp Rock (2008)

This might be really weird, but I like the sequel better than the first one because the people grew up. Joe Jonas got hotter, Demi Lovato got a better haircut and hair color and their songs are better. The story in the sequel really isn’t any better though. This is me from the first movie is and has always been a guilty pleasure of mine, though.

The IMDb scores are about the same, Camp Rock 2 scores a little better than the first one, with a 5,3 to a 5,1.

    Paddington

    1. Paddington 2 (2017)
    2. Paddington (2014)

Paddington was my favorite bear growing up. The movies came pretty late, but that didn’t hold me back watching them! I watched Paddington with my older brother, and we really liked it. We watched the second part with our parents because we knew they would like the movie, even though it sounds like a children’s movie. They did enjoy it. We liked the sequel better than the first one, it’s less dark and Paddington got even cuter. The quality of these movies is extraordinary, they’re underrated! If you haven’t seen it, please do right now.

I guess most of the people and critics agree with my point of view. The IMDb score of the first part is 7,2. The sequel scores a 7,9. Fun thing regarding critics scores, the first part scored a whopping 98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, which is pretty damn high. The second part, however, scores a perfect 100%.

    The Hunger Games

    1. The Hunger Games (2012)
    2. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)
    3. The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay Part 1 (2014)
    4. The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay Part 2 (2015)

So this is the first multiple-part movie franchise that I enjoy in the same order as they came out! I really can explain this, though. I loved the first part, the story was all new, nothing like any other movie. I liked the sequel too! Not as much as the first part, but I liked it. When Mocking Jay Part 1 came out, I came to the conclusion that the more parts, the more science-fiction. And I don’t like science-fiction. Mocking Jay Part 2 had even more science-fiction in it and nothing made sense anymore. There should have been one part, maybe two, but definitely not four.

IMDb almost agrees with me. The first part scores a 7,2, but the sequel a 7,5. And then, just like I said, Mockingjay Part 1 scores far worse with a 6,7 and the last part scores a 6,7.

    Mamma Mia!

    1. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018)
    2. Mamma Mia! (2008)

This one was really hard though. I loved the story of the first one, but I loved the vibe of the second. And I liked the singing in the sequel better! (Let’s compare the singing of young Sam with the singing of old Sam. Yeah, I guess it’s obvious. Also: Young Sam is adorable.) The only thing which I really, really did not like about the second part (except from Donna being dead) was the editing in the last scene in the church. It’s really obvious that a blue screen was used, you can see it through Sophie’s hair. They should have paid more attention to it, it really distracted me from the moment.

And IMDb once again agrees! The first part scores a 6,4 while the newest one scores a 6,9!

Do you agree with my lists? Are there any lists of movie sequels I’ve missed? Leave it in the comments!
